Sending a shout out to the 1st Bridgewater Brownies unit who collectively walked over 894,000 steps in just one week for their OneStep™ Girl Guide Pedometer Challenge, exceeding their goal of 500,000 steps. Incorporating the OneStep™ challenge into their Key to Active Living program was a great way to show the girls they can do anything if they put their minds, heart and feet into it. Congratulations to Sandra Johnston and her fellow leaders for motivating the girls and leading by example. Way to go girls!

What happens when a group of female hikers get together to work on a trail? Not only does the work get done, but the end result is absolutely beautiful. “Anyone who’s ever worked with a woman knows that the job always gets done, and in addition, there is incredible attention to detail.”
That’s Fran Wyman, a Hike Nova Scotia member, and the co-coordinator of the annual “Ladies Only Trail Building Weekend” in Pictou County. Six years ago, she and Ellen Wilcox created this now annual event, as a way to be involved in the work of the Cape to Cape Trail Group.
This unique trail, still being built, is envisioned to traverse 400km from Cape George to Cape Chignecto, crossing four counties. Over 100 volunteers have given their time and sweat to build this trail-set to become Nova Scotia’s first long distance foot path-covering some of the most spectacular vistas in Nova Scotia. Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ celebrated five years of success with walkers all across the province. In total 157 walks were registered on our website including our three Heart and Stroke celebrations in Yarmouth, Halifax and Sydney. In total more than 1750 people committed to pa
rticipating in a walk on walk day through our online tool. We know that number is just a portion of all of the grass-roots walks that took place across the province on May 8th. In addition to community support, we had great pa
rticipation from municipal and provincial government Departments. Elected officials took part in events across the province. At our Halifax event approximately 40% of the legislative assembly participated in our Walk as well as many senior officials from the Department of Health and Wellness and the Deputy Mayor of
HRM. The Honourable Leo Glavine moved to adopt a resolution in Legislature declaring May 8th Nova Scotia Walk Day. Read the resolution.
