SmartTrip Halifax West End

SmartTrip Fall Bike and Walk Fest
Join us on Saturday, September 27th, from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Westmount Elementary School (6700 Edward Arab Ave.) for a fun and free event to help you and your family explore walking and bicycling. The event will feature:

Halifax Try-a-Bike: Designed for people who do not bicycle now (and maybe the last time they did was when they were 14). We provide the bikes, instructors and someone to help get you going. You provide the willingness to get back in the saddle. Designed to be safe and fun for all ages and abilities. Drop in anytime to give it a try.

Nordic Walking: Walking is the new wonder drug and Nordic Walking is taking it to a new level. Certified National Nordic Pole Walking Instructor Bill VanGorder will lead an information and try-out session starting at about 10am.

Introduction to BMX: Adam Berry of Halifax Recreation will offer tips and the opportunity to try BMX bicycling on a beginner course. Kids of all ages are welcome to try this fun and exciting sport.

Basic Bike Repair and Maintenance: Jenna Molenaar of Halifax Cycles will help you understand basic bicycle maintenance, help troubleshoot any issues that you have and teach some basic bike repair techniques.

New bicycle routes in the West End: Halifax Regional Council recently approved a new Active Transportation Priorities Plan. Learn more about routes and route types being proposed for your community.

Bike Art: Work with Sandy Escobar on bike arts and crafts projects

Making Tracks: Walking Safety Leader (Train-the-trainer) Session: This session will provide adults and older youth with the safety knowledge and skills that they need to lead Making Tracks Walking Safety programming with children in their community. Heart & Stroke Walkabout™ – Want to know how many steps you accumulate in your daily commute? Need some more motivation to help make your commute more active? Want to help your co-workers fit activity into their daily lives? Our program can help you.

Hike the Highlands Festival Sept 12-21

The Hike the Highlands Festival, taking place September 12 to 21 on Cape Breton Island, is a ten-day hiking festival that features guided hikes, evening activities & presentations, the hiker distance award, opening & closing ceremonies and a photo contest. Some highlights include the  Through the Lens Photography Workshop and the launching of the new Mica Hill trail in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. There are 24 hikes to choose from. Don’t miss this event!
 
And there’s a new edition of Clarence Barrett’s popular guide to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, launched on August 28.

It’s More than Buses Network Launch Event

Tired of waiting for the bus? Sick of sitting in traffic? Join It’s More than Buses (IMTB) at an open house to launch our latest ideas to bring fast, frequent and reliable transit to Halifax. Halifax Transit has committed to re-design their network, and at our Launch Event we’ll unveil IMTB’s proposed high frequency network that would provide quick, easy, on-time service to many important destinations. The Launch event continues a multi-year campaign to improve transit in Halifax. It marks the start of a new round of education and advocacy – come out and show your support!

DATE: September 18th, 7-9pm

LOCATION: Bus Stop Theatre, 2203 Gottingen Street

It’s More than Buses is a grassroots organization advocating for improved transit in Halifax. IMTB is a partnership between Fusion Halifax and the Planning and Design Centre.

Hike NS Fall Guided Hike Series 2014

Hike Nova Scotia and 17 host organizations across the province have partnered up to offer the 2014 Fall Guided Hike series in September, October and November. There are 43 hikes led by local folks and participants qualify to win “trail prizes.” Hike NS thanks its partners for organizing the hikes on the ground.

52 Week Challenge – September

52 Week Challenge!  There will be one health related challenge per week for the next 52 weeks.

Here’s how it works:

To view the weekly challenge, like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/walkaboutns or request that you be added to distribution list so that the weekly challenges will be sent to you via e-mail. (once a month)
Each week, complete the weekly challenge and let us know by commenting on our FB page or sending us an e-mail to [email protected] You have until Sunday at midnight to complete the weekly challenge and let us know.
If there are some people in your walking group, or friends and family, who don’t use the internet, but completed the weekly challenge – feel free to submit their name as well.
Complete all four challenges during the month and you will have four entries into the monthly draw. Complete 2 and you will have 2 entries into the prize draw.
At the end of the 52 weeks – there will be a grand prize draw.  The more weekly challenges you completed – the more entries into the draw.
Share the weekly challenge with Walkabout groups, co-workers, family and friends.  People can start at any time during the year.
