Happy Halloween! Tonight is the night for trick or treaters to be out and about and it’s a great way to get your walking in as well. If you have kids or grandkids, perhaps nieces and nephews who want/need adult supervision, put on your pedometer and walk with them around your neighbourhood.
Poorly designed suburbs and urban cores have created a world where we drive kids a few blocks and children have more screen time than outdoor play. Is it surprising that more youth are prematurely developing heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes? Dr. Heather McKay is working to turn around that trend. In collaboration with the City of Vancouver, her research team is reshaping a community ─and the heart health of its children ─ by making it easier for kids to be physically active.
Halloween is the perfect opportunity to get kids outdoors and walking in their neighbourhoods. Let tonight be the beginning of a new walking routine you share with your kids!

Congratulations to Leona Conrick of Middleton! Leona’s name was randomly drawn as the winner of Week # 1 in the 150 Minute Challenge. Way to go Leona!
Every seven minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke. Over 1.6 million survivors − and their families and caregivers − are living with the devastating after effects. That’s why the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s vision is healthy lives free of heart disease and stroke. It drives our research in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, which fosters our commitment to health education and helps shape our advocacy work.
As participants in Heart&Stroke Walkabout and the 150 Minute Challenge, you too are making a commitment to your health to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Well done everyone!
