Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ is pleased to announce the two community based walkability projects being funded this year. From the largest University in the province to a village in rural Nova Scotia, both are motivated to support employees and residents in their quest for healthy living. Congratulations to both!
Dalhousie University
Dalhousie University is being supported for their “Walk & Wheel about Dal: Walk-tober Project”. Dalhousie wants to promote a walking culture among their employee groups through a walking challenge in October 2014, called Walktober. Groups will be encouraged to accumulate more than 10,000 steps per day. The organizers will create route maps to walk and wheel around campus (Halifax & Truro campuses) and use the Walkabout website to track steps and support employee groups. Dalhousie’s goal is to provide a spark to change and have employees increase their walking and incorporate it into their daily routine.
Village of Kingston – Recreation Department
The Village of Kingston is being supported for their “Sit for a Bit – Benches for Kingston Sidewalks”. The purpose of this project is to increase the accessibility and appeal of Kingston sidewalks as viable walking routes for adults and seniors. By placing benches at strategic points along the walking route, those who may need to “sit for a bit” during their walk can used these as resting points. It is a great way to encourage walking at any age.
Walkabout™ partners are eager to see the results of these valuable initiatives.
