2012 Walkability Award – New Deadline December 31st

We are now accepting applications for the Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ – 2012 Walkability Award!

Three successful applicants will receive Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ Walkability Award and will be recognized with a plaque, photograph and media release

Nominations
• Nominate any community, school, workplace or public institution
• Nominations can be submitted by individuals who are not associated with the nominated project
• Nominations will be reviewed and assessed by committee

Deadline for Application is 4:00pm, December 31, 2012

East Hants Tidal Run: Come Race with the Tides!

August 19th at Burncoathead Park in Noel, NS. The site of the highest recorded tides in the world. Come explore the ocean floor and participate in the 5k Tidal Run or with Heart&Stroke Walkabout ™ in the Family Tidal Walk or Run.

2012 Walkable Communities Grants – Deadline July 9th!!

REMINDER : Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ is offering Walkable Communities Grants to help organizations or groups take steps to increase walking participation. Deadline for submissions is Monday July 9th 2012.

Walkable Communities Grant 2012 – Application

 

Categories of Grants

Infrastructure:  improved accessibility or physical improvements to existing walking infrastructure to encourage Nova Scotians to walk more (e.g. signage, aesthetic features, safety, cost, scheduling)
Marketing: innovative marketing and encouragement programs (new media, community based social marketing, incentive programs etc.) that link with Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ and encourage Nova Scotians to walk more.
Advocacy: communication or other activities addressing a local issue (e.g. lack of crosswalks) or project that would promote walkability (e.g. Engaging with decision makers to advance policy change or changes in infrastructure, to create long-term change for better walkability)

 

Eligible Groups

 Groups eligible to apply for this funding include organizations, groups of individuals or communities. Those who have previously received a Walkability Grant may reapply.

 

Level of Support

 Grants of $500 to $2,000 will be awarded to 3-12 groups this year.  A total of $6000 will be distributed.  Funds will be distributed by Fall 2012 and completed spending is required by Aug 31 2013.  A final report will be required at that time.Successful applicants will receive a package of Walkabout promotional items to enhance your project.

 

Criteria

 The grant proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria. Priority will be give to proposals that:

Are action and results oriented, with an achievable work plan.
Clearly and effectively link with action or strategic direction of Heart & Stroke Walkabout™(* See attached fact sheet or visit www.heartandstroke.ns.ca)
Communicate a clear purpose and  activities that are reasonable and can be evaluated for their effectiveness
Build public support and involvement
Engage local or regional leaders and decision makers (e.g. informing municipal counselor of your plans)
Build on existing community support or physical activity strategies (e.g. Municipal Physical Activity Leadership strategies; school or municipal active transportation plans)

Congratulations Walkabout members!!
You walked, you ran, 
You biked & swam,
And now we’ve reached the 1.5 Billion mark as of May 17, 2012!
Yes that’s a Billion and a half!
Considering that you could reach the moon and back in a billion steps, we’ve done pretty well for ourselves!!! 
But this is no time to sit back and relax Nova Scotia! Those sneakers have many years left, in them.
Let’s buckle up, and get ready for the next challenge!

HIKE Nova Scotia AGM & HIKES

HIKE NS AGM & HIKES

Annual General Meeting: June 2 Antigonish Co.
Hike Nova Scotia’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, June 2 at St. Joseph’s Lakeside Community Centre, near Antigonish (2752 Ohio East Road, St. Joseph’s, Antigonish Co., see directions at http://sjlcc.ca/). A light lunch will be provided starting at 12 pm with the AGM from 1 to 3 pm.

During the AGM, Hike NS will be happy to recognize Peter Jackson with an award for outstanding leadership in the development of hiking trails in Antigonish County. There will also be presentations on hiking in Antigonish County and on the Keppoch Mountain project.

Hikes: June 1 & 2
Associated with the AGM are two guided hikes offered on Friday, June 1 at Beaver Mountain Provincial Park at 6 pm (directions here) and on June 2 at Keppoch Mountain at 10 am (Exit 30 off Highway 104, James River).
