With over 2,800 entries in 60 days producing one lucky winner, the Heart&StrokeWalkabout™ San Francisco summer contest officially came to a close just before midnight on June 15, 2011. “It was a huge success,” said Adrienne Hadley, Walkabout Coordinator with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. “Our goal was to raise awareness about our signature walking program, Walkabout, and to send one lucky Nova Scotian off to explore one of the most walkable cities in North America – San Francisco. We’re really pleased with the results and are thankful that so many people participated,” she added.
The winning name was drawn at the office of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia by Debbie Richardson of the Nova Scotia Egg Producers – the contest sponsor. “The Nova Scotia Egg Producers are so excited to sponsor such a wonderful program likeWalkabout. We hope this contest has inspired more people to get out and get walking and powering that energy with eggs” said Richardson.
The contest winner, a local Halifax artist, Mary Ann Archibald (www.maryann.ca), accompanied by the guest of her choice, will be flown to San Francisco and provided with accommodations for four nights. She can also take the opportunity to enjoy a variety of walking tours of some of San Francisco’s most amazing sights.
“It feels fantastic to have this trip to look forward to and I love the idea of it being a walking trip. I understand there are a lot of good walking tours in San Francisco. I’ve started to check out apps and travel guides as well as a short list of artists, galleries and attractions to see” said Archibald.
“San Francisco will be a visual feast on foot. I’m looking forward to creating paintings from this trip. Will be exciting to see the cheerful houses on the steep city streets, Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Chinatown, Napa Valley (possible day trip) and more” adds Archibald.
Launched in 2007, Heart&Stroke Walkabout has been focused on supporting Nova Scotians to walk more and, by doing so; gain the health, mental and social benefits associated with this form of activity.
“The benefits of walking are countless. It can help clear your mind, connect you with friends and support your physical health,” noted Hadley. “Through Walkabout, we have a website for everyone’s use and it’s filled with information, resources, and various ways to walkabout. Everyone with access to a computer can visit our site at www.walkaboutns.ca and learn more about how they can become more active through walking.”
Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ is a comprehensive approach to increasing walking in the province, and is led by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Some of its components include a website to track steps, log routes and walking groups, a pedometer lending program through libraries and C@P sites and a workplace walking program. The program is supported by Pfizer, the Presenting Sponsor, Pharmasave, the Government of Nova Scotia and Great West Life. For more information, visit www.walkaboutns.ca.
