Getting Over Barriers

Navigating the Detours

We know that there are challenges that keep you from walking. Don’t let this discourage you– it happens to all of us. Remember that even if you stray from the “walking path” for a little while, the most important thing is that you step back on the path again. Here are a few tips to help you overcome some common challenges:

I don’t have time to walk

Most people report being busy. In fact, the latest Heart and Stroke Foundation Report on Canadians’ Health reports that time is the number one reported barrier keeping us from turning our knowledge into action.

Keep appointments for walking just as you would anything else. Remember that every 10 minute chunk of walking counts! Walking clears your mind and helps you to be more productive, and time taken to walk saves time in the end.

I’m not motivated

Get motivated by tracking your progress. Think about rewards for reaching your goals. You can even join a walking group or consider a walking partner to help you stick to your routine.

I’m busy with family

Make it a family affair. Instead of carpooling, take turns walking your kids to school. Go for a family walk. Walk around the soccer field while the kids are playing. Make plans to incorporate walking into your everyday family activities.

I’m too tired

Walking regularly will increase your energy. When you feel tired, your body may benefit from a walk.

I’m bored when I’m walking

Walking is a great way to spend time with family and friends. You can walk while you discuss business or chat with a friend. Connect with a local walking group here or start your own! For those times you prefer to be alone, bring along a music player or audiobook to keep yourself entertained.  Take notice of the area you are walking to appreciate your surroundings. Bring a camera and upload pictures from your walk to your Walkabout page.

I haven’t been active since I was a kid

Walking doesn’t require skill or expertise. Building a little more walking into your day, every day, is an easy way to shift into being active again. It can help you accomplish several things at once – run errands, walk your kids to school or meet a friend for coffee.

It’s too cold or hot outside

Dress for the weather. When you are prepared, you will enjoy being outdoors. If you don’t want to be outside, walk in your office building or go to a mall, arena or other covered location. Indoor tracks are also a great place to walk as well.

I’m too old to start now

You’re never too old to increase your level of physical activity. Physical activity supports healthy, graceful aging. Many people notice they feel better almost immediately and find that getting around is easier.
