OneStep
This fall, Heart and Stroke Foundation is introducing a new resource to schools to help support grade seven girls to be physically active through walking. Heart&Stroke OneStep is an extracurricular resource featuring pedometers and activities that make it fun to be active. The purpose of OneStep is to help youth become more aware of how active they are and to build more activity in their daily lives in a supportive environment. The resource can be used by any leader in the school or a designate from the community. This resource is the result of research and pilot testing in sixteen schools last winter. This project received funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada and Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness and can provide schools with enough pedometers for half their grade seven students. OneStep is one component of Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ is focused on getting feet back on the streets and walking on the minds and in the hearts of Nova Scotians. The OneStep resource is expanding to accommodate French speaking classrooms thanks to the Department of Health and Wellness. We are in the process of approaching all middle schools in the province, inviting them to participate in OneStep and receive our resource. If you wish to participate please find attached a letter and request form for participation. Or if you wish to find out more about the program or how your school can become involved contact Adrienne Hadley at the Heart and Stroke Foundation at 1-800-423-4432 ext. 3346.
