Winter is a wonderful time to walk. Don’t let cold, wind, snow or rain keep you and your friends from heading out for a walk. Just dress for the weather. Enjoy the many opportunities to go for a walk during our beautiful Canadian Winter

Choose any day in February as Winter Walk Day. Register yourself, your community group or workplace as a Winter Walk Day participant by emailing [email protected]

By just sending the email that you are walking or have walked enters you in the draw for a gift card of $100, but if you send a picture as well, it will give you two chances to win.

A poster is attached for print or to share amongst friends and colleagues.  Share widely as one email can give you a chance to win $100!

Cape Breton Highlands 3 Peaks Challenge – July 18, 2015

The 6th Annual Cape Breton Highlands 3 Peaks Challenge is a unique team event involving four hikers on a team with one being the captain.  Teams must hike three mountains in one day on July 18, 2015.  They include Money Point Light, Money Point Gulch and Franey.

Teams: 4 people per team
Registration Fee: $150 per team (includes National Park pass per team, team T-shirts, closing reception, door prizes and newsletters)
Payment: PayPal or credit card pay your registration fee online
Registration deadline: Tuesday, June 30th register your team and members
Hike Date: Saturday, July 18th

Registration is now open. Only 24 teams will be allowed to register. On April 4, 2015, there were 11 teams registered. 13 teams spots left.  Once the 24 teams spots have been filled, registration will close.   Thank-you for your support of this event.

Hike the Highlands Festival – September 2015

This Fall, Hike the Highlands Festival takes place September 11 – 20, 2015 in the spectacular Cape Breton Highlands.

A ten day hiking festival on the Cabot Trail and Northern Cape Breton that features guided hikes, evening activities & presentations, the hiker distance award, opening & closing ceremonies and a photo contest.

52 Week Challenge – Completed with Winners

The 52 Week Challenge that ran from January to December 2014 was a huge success. Many healthy activities were completed during the year-long challenge. The feedback was positive and we had so many participants incorporate activity into their daily lives.

The event is a partnership of the Ecology Action Centre, Heart&Stroke Walkabout™ and Recreation Nova Scotia’s Take the Roof Off Winter campaign, which promotes healthy outdoor winter activity in Nova Scotia.

Winter Guided Snowshoe Hike Series 2015

Hike Nova Scotia and 16 host organizations across the province have partnered up to offer the 2015 Winter Guided Snowshoe Hike series in January, February and March. There are 35 snowshoe hikes led by local folks and participants qualify to win “trail prizes.” Hike NS thanks its partners for organizing the hikes on the ground as well as the NS Trails Federation and the NS Department of Health and Wellness for their support. Here’s how it works:

To view the weekly challenge, like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/walkaboutns or request that you be added to distribution list so that the weekly challenges will be sent to you via e-mail. (once a month)
Each week, complete the weekly challenge and let us know by commenting on our FB page or sending us an e-mail to [email protected] You have until Sunday at midnight to complete the weekly challenge and let us know.
If there are some people in your walking group, or friends and family, who don’t use the internet, but completed the weekly challenge – feel free to submit their name as well.
Complete all four challenges during the month and you will have four entries into the monthly draw. Complete 2 and you will have 2 entries into the prize draw.
At the end of the 52 weeks – there will be a grand prize draw.  The more weekly challenges you completed – the more entries into the draw.
Share the weekly challenge with Walkabout groups, co-workers, family and friends.  People can start at any time during the year.
